Methyl Methacrylate Traffic Striping Paint
Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) traffic paints are two-component liquid pavement marking/traffic striping materials that consist of a MMA resin (pigmented) and a catalyst. The two components are mixed as they are applied and generally cure in less than 15 minutes (at 77°F). Post applied glass beads shall have a coating recommended by the MMA paint manufacturer to improve bead retention in the stripe. The odor of the MMA may be objectionable until it cures. The odor might be a nuisance in highly populated areas. Category 2 material (4:1 mix ratio) is used in recesses in regularly snow plowed highways and will be the most durable in all other applications.
All materials shall be stored and handled according to manufacturer’s recommendations and must be applied within the manufacturer’s stated shelf life. Materials beyond the indicated shelf life shall not be used unless re-certified by the manufacturer and approved by the Engineer.
Evaluation Criteria: Authorization Procedures and Acceptance Criteria for Methyl Methacrylate Traffic Stripping and Pavement Markings are listed in Section 84-2 of the 2022 and 2024 Standard Specifications.
CATEGORY 2: Application thickness: 10 to 250-mils (250 mils recessed), Mix ratio 4:1 | |||
